Two unsubscription types: HTTP unsubscribe link and unsubscribe mail (mailto link)

An unsubscription via control elements is performed technically via two procedures.

HTTP unsubscribe link One procedure involves using an HTTP unsubscribe link, such as is usually integrated in a regular unsubscribe link in your newsletter.

Up to 30 June 2019, an unsubscription was performed by an email program submitting a GET request to the URL of the newsletter. As of 1 July 2019, the CSA ( ) stipulates that the respective email program must submit a POST request to the URL of the newsletter. This is signalled to the email program in the List-Unsubscribe-Post specification in the email header.

The List-Unsubscribe-Post specification has been integrated in the email header as standard by Inxmail Professional since 1 July 2019. This means that if you handle List-Unsubscribe unsubscriptions in a third-party system or external system, the respective system must be able to process the POST requests to the URL of a newsletter that are submitted by the email program.

Unsubscribe mail (mailto link) The other procedure involves an unsubscribe mail (mailto link) that is sent automatically to the system that performs the recipient unsubscription after the control element has been operated.

The HTTP unsubscribe link procedure is stipulated by the CSA ( ) and the unsubscribe mail procedure is recommended. At the same time, some email applications can only perform one of the two procedures. We therefore recommend that you implement both procedures.

For both procedures, specific entries/information must be included in the list-unsubscribe header. These are described below:
